Video: Righteous & Raucous Weight Transfer in a 1967 Mustang Fastback

If you work with your brain and your hands this could be your creation and your good fun. Civil engineering student and JBA Speed Shop builder Ethan has created a 1967 Ford Mustang fastback that pretty much every gearhead on the planet would want to drive and enjoy.

Burbank, California AutotopiaLA auto storage owner Shawn Davis must sincerely have fun filming every day that his team shoots some video for his AutotopiaLA podcast. Mind you, every single day that he's in the field with his crew, he's either chopping it up with a likeminded gearhead. Or perhaps he's behind the wheel of some motorhead's creation that's louder than a duo of funny cars blasting down a 1/4-mile or a vintage TransAm race on some road course like Willow Springs or Laguna Seca.

Many of the creations that Shawn's crew films for the podcast have Mr. Davis riding in the passenger seat with the very same grin plastering his face as the last time he rode in or piloted someone's mechanical masterpiece.

This particular bit of kit is especially appealing to those of us who are do-it-yourselfers who like to drive fast and look bad to the bone doing it in a pony car that's got far more go than show. But the show is some kind of crazy cool Steve McQueen Bullitt chase scene meets Mel Gibson in Mad Max with the battlescars to prove it and with an engine note that's tune fork perfect that has manual shifts keeping time and setting the pace.

Young Ethan of civil engineering studies and JBA Speed Shop mayhem has built himself a form follows function drag racing or road course cavorting canyon carver that perhaps leans much more to straight line speed with those narrow front Mickey Thompson meats. But put some road racing radials at each corner, and make some suspension changes, and we're guessing your vintage 'Stang torturing some lesser Mopar and GM foes that don't have the outlandish hutzpah that this fastback shows. It's quite clear that young Ethan's currently more a 1/4-mile aficionado at present. Yet, he works with folks like J.Bittle, owner of JBA Speed Shop, and Mr. Bittle is really into the vintage road racing, when he and his team aren't building some great muscle, exotic, and classic cars for their many clients.

Yes, we're guessing that Ethan will also be optimizing weight transfer dynamics around corners as he and his Mustang A-code fastback get to know each other better as the years pass and the engineering challenges become bigger and more fulfilling.

Where will Ethan go with his '67 fastback next? Will he continue to be tantalized by straight line speed and weight transfer from front to back. Or will he relish taking on the twisties in his '67 fastback on down the line. Time will tell. Considering that a 1967 Mustang notchback coupe won the 1967 Trans Am Racing Championship in 1967, Ethan's Mustang already has that sort of road course DNA in its system. Time will tell...
